If you're someone who’s always dreamed of acting—but think you missed your chance—this is for you.

As a working actor and acting coach, I know the feeling all too well. At any audition, I can spiral into this thought:If I just book this, my whole life changes. If I don’t, something must be wrong with me—and maybe I’ll never book again.

Sound familiar?

I’ve also worked with countless students who wanted to take that high school drama class or major in theatre in college—but didn’t. Maybe they chose stability. Maybe they prioritized family. Maybe life just pulled them in a different direction. And you know what? Those are wise, meaningful choices. But that doesn’t mean it’s too late to return to the thing you love.

Here’s the truth: There is no window.

This might be the best—and most annoying—thing I can tell you. But it’s real. There is no expiration date on becoming an actor. And here’s exactly why.

Acting Isn’t Like Ballet or Violin

You don’t need to start acting at age 3 to become exceptional. Acting is unique. Every new role asks you to re-learn how to act. You can build your toolbox—memorization, imagination, personalization—but ultimately, acting is a soul-first art form. It requires your full presence and emotional truth.

This means you can start at any time.

Whether you're 5 or 55, it’s never too late to begin acting. I’ve taught students of all ages, and I’ve seen what happens when someone finally listens to that small voice saying: Come back to this. Once you start, momentum builds. The more you act, the more you’ll be asked to act.

What About the Career Side?

Let’s real-talk.

Yes—there are a LOT of actors. And yes, you’ll walk into rooms full of people who look like you. But guess what? That’s true for everyone. No matter your age, background, or zip code, there’s space for you.

There are 20 actors at an audition. Why not make it 21?

There are a dozen fried chicken spots in your city—does that mean you don’t try the new one? Not at all. Sometimes the new one becomes your favorite.

In this business, you might be someone’s new favorite.

For my already working actors, out there, I can't tell you how many of my peers had dry spells for two+ years, and then suddenly a phenomenal role came their way. It takes an insane amount of patience to have hope for something that far out, but all I can say is I'm so glad those friends didn't give up in the slow days. Their talent was worth waiting for.

My First Acting Job Wasn’t Because of My Résumé

I booked my first professional role right after school. Did the Juilliard name help? I'm sure it did. But on the other hand, I didn’t have credits, and plenty of other Juilliard grads out there did. I didn’t have connections. But the creative team saw something in me that aligned with their vision.

The lesson? It’s not always about what you’ve done—it’s about how you show up, today. For those of you who’ve worked professionally before and are afraid you’ll never book again—don’t buy that lie. If you’ve booked before, you’ll book again. Period.

Will You Age Out of Certain Roles? Sure.

If your dream is to play 11-year-old Harry Potter in the next remake...we may need to reframe. But for most roles? Age is not the limitation you think it is.

And if you’re wondering about prestigious acting schools like Juilliard—yes, some programs have age limits. But that doesn't mean training is off the table. There are incredible online acting classes and adult acting programs designed specifically for those entering (or re-entering) the field later in life.

Can Acting Be Your Full-Time Income?

Short answer: Maybe. I’ve personally had stretches where, for years, I got by just fine on acting income alone. But those stretches are often separated by periods that require a lot more hustle. For most actors, acting income by itself isn’t enough. (I know—how annoying is that.)

Even actors with Broadway credits, TV guest spots, and recurring roles often supplement their income with teaching, coaching, or other creative work. I graduated from Juilliard with 18 talented classmates. Among us: a sitcom regular, multiple TV co-stars, national tours, Broadway productions, and more. And yet, only one of us currently pays all their bills through acting alone.

The truth? This career requires more than talent. It demands financial flexibility, creativity, and—sometimes—a solid side hustle. We don’t become actors for the paycheck. We do it for that feeling we get when we read an incredible script and feel called to collaborate with it. We do it because we know our craft can serve audiences—by helping to tell a story that matters.

Your Life Outside Acting Is Your Superpower

If you’ve worked in tech, raised a family, managed a business—that is gold in the audition room.

Great actors aren’t just skilled. They’re full, interesting human beings. When I was at Juilliard, we were told by visiting casting directors and successful alumni over and over:

"We don’t want actors. We want human beings who act."

The life you’ve lived makes your work richer. All you need now is the craft to back it up. That’s where training comes in—and I’d love to work with you through Acting Coaching Online.

I’ve Seen It Work—At Every Age

On the National Tour of To Kill a Mockingbird, I was in a company of actors in their 20s, 40s, 60s, and even 80s. They were raising kids, remodeling kitchens, taking vacations, saving for retirement—all while building meaningful careers on stage.

Were they millionaires? No. But they were working actors who built full, beautiful lives.

You can too.

So Why Choose Acting?

Not because it's easy. Not for money. But because you love it.

Because it calls to you. Because it’s so damn fun.

And because it’s never too late to start.
